Carp fishing equipment: when to use strong and large hooks
mag 6, 2020Carp fishing equipment: when is it appropriate to use strong and large hooks? In this article we will spell out what they are, and compare them with traditional ones.
The strong and large hooks devised for the great European lakes
Strong and large hooks are increasingly in demand, particularly by carp fishers. Nevertheless, once you try them out, you will realize that they are useful not only when it comes to great European lakes and rivers. For this reason all the hook manufacturers describe the so-called “X version”, or thicker wire, as best-selling hooks. Even at first sight, you can spot their main quality: the “wire”, that is the metal it is made of, is thicker than the standard version. Large hooks are especially designed for continental carp fishing, which stands out for its long range and fishing locations crammed with obstacles. Concrete examples in Italy are: The Bolsena lake, the Pusiano lake, the Viverone lake or the Garda lake, but also other lakes where there are significant drops of over 200 meters.
Why, then, using an enlarged hook?
A stronger and enlarged hook is crucial in many situations: for example, when carp fishers find themselves having to fish with the clutch shut down, as the fish instantly sneaks into barriers. And since the pulling power is loaded on the hook and the line, the metal wire has to be sturdy. Also, hooks can make a difference in that they must point and not open, so as not to lose the carp.
New generation hooks vs steel hooks
Are you still hesitating and continue to prefer steel hooks? Well, you should know that the shortcoming of the steel hook is that of being heavy, despite having a tip with remarkable sealing quality and sharpness. New generation hooks, though, are made of very light materials, such as steel and carbon alloys, and let you build well balanced triggers. Anyhow, keep in mind that you need to choose the hook based on your needs. Indeed, it is not always the case that using a thick hook means being able to lure a big fish without struggling.
