Where to fish in Salento

set 1, 2020

Among the many fishing itineraries that Puglia offers, we suggest that of Lido Marini, near Santa Maria di Leuca. This place offers two possibilities: surf-casting fishing from the seashore and match fishing. Let's find out which marine species populate the waters of this extraordinary place and what equipment to use for a fulfilling fishing experience.

A splendid fishing itinerary in Salento: Lido Marini

Salento, which overlooks the crystal clear waters of the Ionian sea, offers great opportunities for fishing. Mainly known for its favorable characteristics for surf-casting fishing, today we are talking about Lido Marini, along the Levante cliff. This strip of land is located a stone's throw from Ugento and Santa Maria di Leuca and is a great fishing itinerary, as well as a very charming place. At first you are greeted by a breathtaking view, characterized by stretches of sand mixed with rocks surronded by small hills covered in greenery. After this brief description of the territory, let's focus on the marine fauna present here.

What can you fish?

The waters of Lido Marini are rich in murmurs, rock fishes and small salps. There are also mullets, sea bream and sea bass, which hide among the ravines of the rocky cliff. Omnipresent are the maidens, the sparaglione bream and the banded bream. The best times to enjoy this fishing itinerary in Salento are at dawn – with the sun rising "from inland" - and at sunset. The central hours of the day are not the most suitable due to numerous bathers, canoes and pedal boats, and to the crystal clear waters. The latter, indeed, could prove to be a problem because even the most transparent fluorocarbon fishing lines become visible to the fishes.

Which fishing line and which tackle to use?

It is important that the fishing line – the classic one is fine - has a very long range, around 30/40 meters, to keep away from annoying coastal currents. The terminal of the fishing line must necessarily be short, in order to warn the bites quickly. The most suitable lure to attach to the fishing line is the Korean type. However, maggots or worms can also be used. A useful tip is to break a fragment of the worm and gently insert it through the barb, to accompany it on the hook. If instead of fishing directly on the beach you prefer reef fishing, you will need to move a little, towards the Lungomare Rubichi, up to the point where the road reaches the low cliff. Here you can position yourself in complete tranquility, especially in the evening, equipped with rod, fishing line, reel and bench. As for the catch, the prey present in the area are sea bass, mullet, white bream, sea bream and other rock fish such as wrasse and weever.
