The choice of line for a specific technique, such as surfcasting, is particularly important and should not be underestimated. To make the correct purchase, few factors must be taken into consideration. Let's find out more in this article.

Notes on surfcasting technique

First of all, let's understand what surfcasting is. It is a sport fishing technique that is practiced directly from the seashore. Originated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, it soon spread to our country as well. To practice it, very strong rods are used, capable of casting bait and lead at considerable distances from the shore. Surfcasting takes advantage of the tides that move the sandy bottom, creating an area that is particularly rich in food and attractive for predatory fish and large and small rooting in search of microorganisms.

Surfcasting technique: the recommended equipment

Now that we understand what the surfcasting technique consists of, let's consider the equipment we will have to use. Generally, the rods are between 4 and 5 meters long in order to maintain the level of the line above the waves. It is essential that the rod is powerful to hold heavy rigs or bulky lures. The same goes for the reel, whose spool is "long cast", that is, of great capacity (from 300 to 400 meters) for long distance casting. For the surfcasting technique it is essential to always carry with you the weights for the baits and a rod holder such as a tripod, or a stake.

Why is the choice of fishing line essential?

Choosing the wrong fishing line means having a lot of difficulties during the fishing. This is particularly important in surfcasting. In fact, if you use a line with a too small diameter, the waves of the sea will prevail. Threads that are too thin are in fact an obstacle, as the current can make them sink into the sand. The risk is to lose many leads and to have to redo as many rigs. As for the material, nylon lines are perfect for bottom fishing such as surfcasting. This is because they guarantee great smoothness. All this translates into less stress for the rig and for the baits that are thrown.

So, what is the right diameter for a surfcasting fishing line? The basic rule is to never go below a diameter of 0.26 mm for remote searches in rough seas, especially if we are talking about a conical line. Using this diameter also helps us to do a few more meters in the launch phase. If, on the other hand, we want to fish close to the shore in search of sea bass, it is better to opt for a 0.40 line.
