Where to fish in Trentino

apr 8, 2020

The Trentino region is rich in invaluable sceneries thanks to the Dolomites, the beautiful villages, the valleys, the woods, the mountain peaks and all sorts of waterways. Trentino is a destination much loved by tourists, owing to its vast cultural heritage, and it is the perfect choice for those who love sports such as hiking, skiing, rock climbing, snowboarding and… fishing!

Indeed, this region is a top destination for fishing lovers. So, where can you fish in Trentino? Let us discover some of its rivers, streams and lakes!

Fishing in rivers

The region is dotted by a number of rivers, such as the Brenta, the Basso Sacra, the Alto Sacra, the Chiese and the Adige, in which you can go fishing and luring an abundant variety of fishes.

The Brenta river flows through the village of Borgo Valsugana: fishing is banned in the village, however on the outskirts you can find many people fly fishing, touch fishing with natural baits and spin fishing, luring marbled trout, brown trout and hybrids. The most common methods used by those angling in the Basso Sarca and Alto Sarca rivers are fly fishing and spin fishing. If you are angling in the Chiese river you need to be aware that fishing with barb is forbidden, regardless of whether you are using artificial baits such as minnow and rubbers, or natural baits such as earthworms. The catch is generally on the small size due to the limited dimension of the river: thus, catching a large size trout is a particularly remarkable achievement. Angling in the river Adige is particularly enjoyable along the stretch that flows from south of Trento to the border with Veneto, using angling methods such as fly fishing, spin fishing and touch fishing. In any case, the ideal itinerary for anglers on the Adige river is the stretch that flows through the city of Trento, from the highway A22 bridge to the Fersina bridge, where you can catch rainbow trout, brown trout and some nice salmon trout.

Fishing in streams

Trento is rich in streams where you can go fishing. Streams such as the Fersina, the Pescara, the Centa, the Noce and the Avisio, to mention a few. The Fersina is the perfect testing ground to try out all the angling methods, including fly fishing and spin fishing. The Fersina has an abundant variety of fish consisting of rainbow trout, chub, barbel, marble trout and brown trout. To catch the brown trout it is recommended to use touch fishing methods in holes, due to the fish size and aggressiveness. The Centa is a mountain stream with varying water flow, low in summer and winter, and higher in spring. It is an almost pristine natural environment, which means that fishes are not used to human presence and, thus, are easily scared by the slightest noise: this makes angling in the Centa obviously harder. The most commonly used methods are brook trout with remote control, and light and ultralight spin fishing. The Pescara is a mountain stream also rich in marble trout and brown trout. In the Pescara, you can also find rainbow trout going upstream from the lake, due to changes in water levels of the Santa Giustina dam.  Moving on to the Noce, it is one of the most important streams in Trentino: starting in Val di Pejo, it gives origin to the Santa Giustina dam and the Mollaro lake, and flows through the valleys of Val di Sole and Val di Non. The most common catches from the stream are marble trout, brown trout and hybrids, but there are also specimens of graylings and barbs. The Avisio stream starts in the Marmolada, flows through the valleys of Val di Fassa, Val di Fiemma and Val di Cembra and ends in the Lavis, in the Adige area.  Here anglers can fly-fish, spin-fish and brook trout, while enjoying the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Fishing in lakes

Trentino is a region dotted with many lakes of different size and character, where angling is gratifying. One case in point is the Lago delle Piazze, of artificial origin but rich in rainbow trout, pike, brown trout, chub and rudder. Here you can enjoy coarse fishing, trout fishing or spin fishing. Worthy of mention is the Santa Colomba lake, of alpine origin, with its calm and pristine waters in which you can challenge yourself with pole fishing and English style angling. Here, by law, it is possible to try out fishing trout with rubberized or natural baits, while spin fishing is allowed only with rubberized baits; corrugators or spoons are forbidden. In the heart of Trentino there is another attraction: the Terlago lake. This is undoubtedly the richest in the area. Its varied depth, ranging from a meter (nearby the shore) to eight to ten meters (towards the middle of the lake), makes it a perfect lake to try different angling methods and to catch carp, tench, saplings, perch, rudder and gardon.
